What is this utility for?

This utility will update your PXIe-1075 and/or PXIe-1082 chassis to use the latest firmware revision, v2.0.2. It addresses an issue in which performing certain operations can lead to the chassis powering off.

When should I install this utility?

This update is necessary only for the PXIe-1075 and PXIe-1082 chassis. No other hardware that is present in the system will be affected.

Utility Requirements

This utility requires the following:

How to determine whether you have the minimum PXI Platform Services version

Follow the instructions below to determine the version of PXI Platform Services installed.

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. On Windows XP, click Add/Remove Programs. On Windows Vista and 7, switch to Classic View and double-click Program and Features.
  3. Click National Instruments Software and click the button to change or modify.
  4. A National Instruments Software window opens. Verify that version 2.5.0 or higher appears in the software list as: NI PXI Platform Services <version> and/or NI PXI Platform Services <version> for LabVIEW Real-Time.
  5. Additional Instructions for LabVIEW RT:
    1. Open MAX.
    2. Locate your Real-Time target under Remote Systems in the left pane.
    3. Under your target, right-click Software and click Add/Remove Software.
    4. In the software list, select NI-VISA <version>. The NI-VISA version is not important, as long as you already have PXI Platform Services 2.5.0 or later on the host.

NI PXI Platform Services is available for download by visiting ni.com/support and clicking Drivers and Updates. Search for "Platform Services" in the Search box, and PXI Platform Services 2.5.0 (or any later version) should appear in the product list. Follow the instructions for downloading and installing this software onto the host machine that will run the update utility.

Update Instructions

Caution Do not interrupt the update process after it starts. Doing so could cause hardware damage to the chassis, and it will need to be sent in for repair.

Follow these steps to apply the PXIe-1075/PXIe-1082 chassis update.

Windows XP/Vista/7

  1. Ensure that all utility requirements are met as listed in this readme.
  2. Close all running programs and VIs.
  3. Ensure that all PXIe-1075 and PXIe-1082 chassis are powered on and properly detected by the host controller.
  4. Note Be sure to successfully complete all the above steps, or else the utility may not be able to locate the chassis to apply the update. If any problems arise in properly detecting the RT target and chassis, contact National Instruments support for assistance.

  5. Copy and run the self-extracting PXIe-1075_1082_Firmware_Updater.exe file onto the host machine connected to the chassis.
  6. Open the Windows folder and run PXIe-1075_1082_Firmware_Updater.exe to run the Windows update utility. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. The update process may take a few minutes per chassis receiving the update.
  8. Caution Do not interrupt the update process after it starts. Doing so could cause hardware damage to the chassis, and it will need to be sent in for repair.

Note The chassis fans and power switch LED on each PXIe-1075 and PXIe-1082 chassis may change states during the update, which is normal for this process.

  9. When the utility completes successfully, verify that the correct number of chassis have been updated. If any errors are listed or any other unexpected results appear, copy the utility output to a text file, save it, and contact National Instruments support for assistance.

LabVIEW Real-Time

  1. Ensure that all utility requirements are met as listed in this readme.
  2. Close all running programs and VIs on the host controller.
  3. Ensure that the RT target is properly connected to the chassis that require the update.
  4. Note Be sure to successfully complete all the above steps, or else the utility may not be able to locate the chassis to apply the update. If any problems arise in properly detecting the RT target and chassis, contact National Instruments support for assistance.

  5. Copy and run the self-extracting PXIe-1075_1082_Firmware_Updater.exe file onto the host machine connected to the RT target.
  6. Open the LabVIEW RT folder. This folder contains the following folders:
  7. Open the lvproj project file inside the folder that corresponds to the LabVIEW Real-Time version on the target.
  8. Right-click the RT PXI Target listing in the project and go to Properties.
  9. Configure the target IP address and click OK to accept the changes.
  10. Right-click the target and select Connect. If this process fails to complete successfully, contact National Instruments support for assistance.
  11. Open UpdateFirmware.vi listed under the target.
  12. Read the information in the yellow box in the VI.
  13. Run the VI and click the Update! button to run the utility. The Output window displays the progression of the update.
  14. The update process may take a few minutes per chassis receiving the update.

  15. When the update finishes, verify in the Output box that the correct number of chassis have been updated. If any errors are listed or any other unexpected results appear, copy the Output box contents to a text file, save it, and then contact National Instruments support for assistance.

Known Issues

If the utility detects no chassis, verify in MAX that the chassis can be found and is responding. Contact National Instruments support or visit the web at to search for known issues involving chassis detection.

If the utility VI fails to deploy onto the RT target, PXI Platform Services may be missing from the RT target. Run the installer for PXI Platform Services again on the host to be sure that the right features are selected for installation (for example, real-time support if running the utility on the LabVIEW Real-Time OS). If working with an RT target, also ensure that both LabVIEW RT and VISA are installed on the target in MAX.
