Steps to Install the LabVIEW 6.1 Real-Time and DSC 6.1 Modules

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>DSC Module
Primary Software Version: 6.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software:

Problem: The following document contains some recommendations for the LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control module and LabVIEW Real-Time Module installations. It also links to known installation issues.

Solution: LabVIEW 6.1 can co-exist with any previous version of LabVIEW. The same applies to DSC and RT modules. However, you cannot mix LabVIEW, DSC or RT 6.1 versions with 6.0.x versions. All versions have to be the same in order to work together. For example, you cannot install DSC 6.0.2 version on the top of LabVIEW 6.1 version.

For information about running different versions of RT modules on the same computer refer to the Installing Software on RT series PXI hardware knowledge base in the related links.

Beware that only one proxy (or VI-Based server) can be active at a time. Each DSC version installs its own copy of the proxy VIs that won't work with any other version. For example, there are 6.0.2 and 6.1 version installed, but only one OPC Proxy can be registered - suppose the 6.0.2 version is registered. This means that you'll only be able to connect to an OPC server from 6.0.2 version. Connection attempt from 6.1 version will generate an error. For more information refer to the Why Do I Get "Unable to Launch XYZ. Error when loading XYZ Proxy..." on a DSCEngine Launch? knowledge base in the related links.

If you are using FieldPoint IAS server you need to upgrade to FieldPoint 3.0.1. This is not neccessary if you are using the OPCFieldPoint or Logos protocol. For more information refer to the Unable to Launch FieldPoint after Upgrading to the LabVIEW DSC Module 6.1 knowledge base in the related links.

If you plan to uninstall LabVIEW 6.0.x and keep only the latest 6.1 version, do so before you start the 6.1 installation!

We recommend using the default installation, unless it is necessary to run a custom installation. Beware when doing a custom install, there are dependencies between the application components. For example, if you choose not to install the LabVIEW Advanced Analysis Library, you won't be able to run most of the LabVIEW DSC examples.

If you select the custom installation and decide to make some edits in the Feature Tree, then pay special attention to the description of the action set for the edited feature. There are 4 actions you can set for each item: install it, leave it installed, leave it uninstalled or uninstall it. Check the picture below for an illustrative example.

Recommended installation steps:
  1. Reboot your system just before you start the installation. There are several processes running on the background that have to function correctly during the installation. They will be used during the installation (msiexec.exe) or upgraded by the installer (logos services, nimax.exe etc.). If any of them are not running properly, you will experience an installer failure. Restarting your computer and then running the installation just after the restart minimizes chance for this error.

  2. Close all applications, including your virus scan.

  3. Run the LabVIEW installer. Reboot after the installation.

  4. Run the LabVIEW Real-Time module installer. Reboot if prompted.

  5. Run the LabVIEW DSC module installer. Reboot if prompted.

Note: The Real-Time module and DSC module installation steps can be swapped. You can install the DSC module first, followed by the Real-Time installation.

  6. Install LabVIEW Add-on toolkits

  7. Mass compile? There is no need to mass compile DSC or RT VIs, however if you have installed some of the add-on toolkits, you'll need to mass compile them. Locate the respective toolkit folders within the vi.lib and mass compile them (Tools » Advanced » Mass Compile). Some of the add-ons are installed directly in the vi.lib (FieldPoint), some of them are in the vi.lib\AddOns directory. You should also mass compile the toolkits example folders in the LabVIEW 6.1\example directory.

Example of a Feature Tree. In this case, the LabVIEW 5.0.1 Support will be installed, the 5.1 support will remain uninstalled, the 6.0 support will be uninstalled and the 6.1 support will remain installed.
