Getting Started with NI Volume License Manager

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.1.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I want to use NI Volume License Manager (VLM) to manage the licenses on my Volume License Agreement (VLA). How does NI VLM work, and how can I get started using it?

Solution:
NI VLM helps you manage and administer your National Instruments software licenses. The computer that hosts NI VLM is referred to as the license server and the end-users' computers are referred to as the client computers. The license computer hosts the NI VLM, which the company's license administrator operates; the client computers contact the server computer to check for permission from NI VLM before launching the software. The license administrator does not need any particular knowledge of licensing or National Instruments software because the NI VLM makes managing the licenses easy. This short document will guide you through the setup and configuration of NI VLM; the purpose of this demonstration is to successfully guide you to a state where your NI VLM and client software are operational.
  1. Install NI VLM on a reliable computer accessible by most of the clients that will access NI VLM
  2. Emailing NI and Obtaining a License File
  3. Installing the License File
  4. Configuring Server Settings
  5. Client Computers or Users Connected to Network (Adding Computers and Setting Permissions Manually)
  6. Client Computers or Users Not Connected to Network (Creating a Disconnected or Home License)
  7. Generating an Activity Compliance Log

Note: You can find the entire getting started guide as a single document at the Getting Started with NI Volume License Manager tutorial on NI Developer Zone. It is also available as a flowchart in the NI VLM Help.

For a description of NI VLM, see KnowledgeBase 47I9SCQA: What is NI Volume License Manager?

NI VLM is included at no cost to any customer who has a VLA. VLAs require five or more development seats of software, which do not have to be five seats of the same product. A VLA includes many other benefits including quantity discounts and Standard Service Program (SSP).
