What Is the Difference Between PCII and PCIIA Mode on a GPIB-PCII/IIA?

Hardware: GPIB

Problem:
I have a GPIB-PCII/IIA board and I want to use it in Windows 98/95. I see that you recommend using PCII mode under Windows 98/95. What is the difference between PCII and PCIIA mode?

Solution:
The GPIB-PCII/IIA board has two modes (PCII and PCIIA), which differ in the way they implement the input/output (I/O) address(es) and interrupt schemes for the board. In PCII mode the board occupies 8 consecutive I/O addresses. This makes it compatible with the old GPIB-PCII boards. In PCIIA mode the board occupies a pair of 8 consecutive I/O addresses, for a total of 16 non-consecutive I/O addresses. This makes it compatible with the old GPIB-PCIIA boards.

National Instruments strongly recommends that you use PCII mode. There is a potential problem with the Device Manager when using your board in PCIIA mode under Windows 98/95. The Device Manager does not reliably report base address conflicts involving the GPIB-PCII/IIA in PCIIA mode. Additionally, the Device Manager fails to display all of the I/O addresses used by the GPIB-PCII/IIA in PCIIA mode. Therefore, a base address conflict may go unreported when using your board in PCIIA mode.

Base address conflicts can cause your computer to hang or otherwise behave unreliably. It is safest to use the GPIB-PCII/IIA board only in PCII mode, not in PCIIA mode. If you install your GPIB-PCII/IIA board in PCIIA mode, and you experience problems in communicating with your board, then reinstall the board in PCII mode.
