Can I Connect Two Cameras to PCI-1411 and Decide Which to Use Programmatically?

Hardware: Image Acquisition (IMAQ)>>Analog Image Devices>>PCI-1411

Problem:
Can I connect two cameras to the PCI-1411 (one to the BNC composite connector and one to the S-Video signal connector) and then decide which one to use programmatically? I know that I cannot use them simultaneously, but I would like to use them in different programs.

Solution:
Yes, you can connect two cameras to the PCI-1411 (one to the BNC composite connector and one to the S-Video signal connector). The two cameras cannot be used simultaneously because the board has only one input channel.

If you connect two cameras to the PCI-1411, you can programmatically select which of the two cameras to use in a LabVIEW application, or in any image acquisition application written in another language. This can be done by using two different interface files, as follows:

  1. Start with the interface for img0 in Measurement & Automation Explorer.
  2. Set the interface to NTSC by right-click Channel 0 and select Camera»Standard»NTSC.
  3. Right-click img0 and select New. Save img0 as a different name, such as 1411CompCh.iid.
  4. Reload img0 by right-clicking the new interface name 1411CompCh in Measurement and Automation Explorer and select Interface»img0.
  5. Set the interface to NTSC S-Video by right-click Channel 0 and select Camera»Standard»NTSC S-Video.
  6. Right-click img0 and select New. Save img0 as a different name, such as 1411SVideoCh.iid.

Now, in LabVIEW you can acquire from either channel by specifying the appropriate interface name (that is, 1411CompCh or 1411SVideoCh). This works if you do not change to a different PCI-1411. If the board is changed, then load the interfaces files in Measurement & Automation Explorer to update the serial number.
