Troubleshooting ODBC Connection Problems to the Citadel Database

Primary Software: Lookout
Primary Software Version: 4.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module

Problem:
When I do an ODBC query into the Citadel database, I receive errors and am unable to make the connection. How do I solve this problem?

Solution:
There are several possible causes of this problem, which is a generic error that indicates a problem reading into the Citadel database. However, you can use the steps below to effectively troubleshoot the problem.
  1. You should begin troubleshooting connection problems to the Citadel database using the local computer. First perform the troubleshooting steps below from the computer that has the Citadel database. Then, repeat the steps for a remote connection from a network computer if needed.

  2. Before troubleshooting connection problems too deeply, it is recommended that you follow National Instruments published procedures for making ODBC connections. Step-by-step procedures are published for connections from Microsoft Access, Query, Excel, and Visual Basic. These procedures are published in the National Instruments Developer Zone (see the related link below).

  3. Upgrade the Logos driver, which contains the Citadel ODBC drivers. Logos is National Instruments proprietary mechanism for inter-process communication used by automation software products (Lookout, LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control). Logos also implements the Citadel server and time synchronization server, as well as installing the Citadel ODBC drivers. Follow the "Logos Services" link below to update the drivers (Lookout 4.0.x, Lookout 4.5.x, LabVIEW DSC only). If you are remotely connecting to the Citadel database, make sure that the same version of Logos is installed at both the computer with the database, and the computer on the network accessing the database. Also, be sure to read the "read-me" file provided with the Logos upgrade.

  4. If you have completed steps 1 through 3 above and the problem is still occurring, the root cause may be a corrupt database. You can quickly test this by downloading the "testdata.zip" file attached below, and placing this database in a new directory on your computer. Then, repeat the ODBC query into this test database to see if the problem re-occurs.

Note: You will likely have to re-build your ODBC query from scratch to point to this new database. Also, this test database will not work unless you have completed the Logos upgrade from step 3 above.

This test will divide the problem in half. If connecting to the test database works, but connecting to your database does not work, then this strongly indicates database corruption. However, if you fail to connect to the test database, then this indicates an installation/configuration type problem. Either way, please contact National Instruments Technical Support (www.ni.com/ask) with the results of this test. Additionally, for a detailed procedure for recovering from a corrupt database, please see the related link "Can I Fix a Corrupted Database in Lookout 4?" below.

  5. Proper operation of ODBC depends on a large number of Microsoft ODBC drivers. Occasionally, problems occur if these drivers have DLLs with mismatched versions, missing DLLs, etc. If this is the case, then the Microsoft ODBC drivers should be re-installed. Microsoft ODBC drivers can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com, and are packaged under the title "Microsoft Data Access Components", or MDAC for short. In addition to the MDAC package itself, Microsoft has a tool called "Component Checker" that will scan your ODBC installation for errors. The "Microsoft ODBC Downloads" link below will give you access to both MDAC and the Component Checker Tool.
