Why do I Receive a 'Fatal Error! Required NIPathsDir property CVIDIR' Message when Running a National Instruments Installer?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Professional Development System
Primary Software Version: 8.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am trying to run a National Instruments Installer, but I see the following error:

Why does this error occur, and how can I fix it?

Solution:
Some National Instruments installers require the existence of a 'My Documents' and/or a 'My Pictures' folders.  If these folders do not exist the installation will fail.  This error can also happen if your 'My Documents' or 'My Pictures' folders are on a network location which is not accessible at installer runtime.

You can fix the issue by assigning the 'My Documents' or 'My Pictures' folders.  This can be done in one of two ways:
  • Right-click on My Documents from the Start Menu or your Desktop, and select Properties.  Edit the Target folder location field.

  • You can choose to edit a registry location directly.  The key value can be found at  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders.
If manual assignment of the 'My Documents' or 'My Pictures' folder doesn't solve the issue, try creating a temporary user account in Windows and running the installer from that location.

NOTE: This behavior is only seen in NI Installers version 2.5x and previous.  See the related links section below to find out how to find out the NI Installers version your NI software is using.

NOTE:
Editing the registry carries inherent risks. Make sure you are familiar with the registry before editing the registry, manually or programmatically. Making a backup is always a good idea.
