What Are Some of the Limitations of Comedi?

Problem: What are some of the trade-offs or sacrifices when using the Comedi DAQ driver?

Solution: Comedi is a third-party E Series DAQ driver for Linux operating systems. However, the Comedi driver does not support the full feature set of the E-Series boards. See related links below for more information on Comedi. Some of the limitations and supported features include:

  • For analog I/O Comedi only supports IRQ transfers and does not support DMA.
  • There is also a limited number of options for timing/triggering available.
  • It does support RSE, NRSE, and Differential input modes.
  • Comedi does support the DIO lines, but does not support counters.
  • It has been said that Comedi does not integrate into LabVIEW very well and can be a hassle to use; however a lot of people use it successfully.
Note: NI does not support Comedi, but there is a support mailing list available for users on the Comedi web site.

A better alternative to using the Comedi driver is the NI-DAQmx Base for Linux driver. This driver offers Linux users an innovative programming interface similar to NI-DAQmx measurement services software as well as increased ease-of-use in connecting with high-performance NI data acquisition hardware.
