Connecting to Ethernet Targets with Multiple Networks Cards in the Host

Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers, CompactRIO>>Controllers, PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers, Image Acquisition (IMAQ)>>Compact Vision System

Problem:
I am trying to connect to a real-time system such as a PXI Chassis, cRIO, Compact FieldPoint, or Desktop ETS. My host computer has multiple Ethernet cards and I cannot connect to the real-time target and it is not showing up in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). What is the problem?

Solution:
National Instruments software uses the system default network card to detect and connect to real-time devices and other remote targets. If you have multiple network adapters, it is possible that the secondary network adapter is searching for the targets. You must either:
  • Connect your device to the default Ethernet card.
  • Change the Ethernet port connected to the real-time target to default.
    •  Navigate to Control Panel»Network Connections»Advanced»Advanced Settings...

    • Press the Up and Down arrow to rearrange the adapters.  Move the RT connection to the top of the list to make it default.  Click OK to apply the changes.

    • If this still does not work, sometimes disabling the second adapter, usually a wireless internet connection, allows the first to create a connection.
