Error Messages: Non-printable ASCII Character Received and Error Identifying Module When Installing a FP-1001

Hardware: FieldPoint>>Controllers/Network Modules>>FP-1000

Problem: I have currently installed the FP-1000 successfully in FieldPoint Explorer. I now am trying to add the FP-1001 by connecting it to the RS-485 repeater port of the FP-1000. After setting up the hardware and clicking Find Devices in FieldPoint Explorer, two error messages are returned; Non-printable ASCII Character Received and Error Identifying Module. What do these errors mean and how can I correctly install the FP-1001?

Solution: The two errors, Non-printable ASCII Character Received and Error Identifying Module, are primarily related to the RS-485 transmission lines in the system. Because there is poor communication between the FP-1000 and the FP-1001, FieldPoint Explorer is unable to identify the module and bad data is returned to the FP-1000.

In general, shielded, (2) twisted-pair wiring should be used for a 4-wire RS-485 system. The shield should be tied to common on one end of the transmission system, typically the FP-1000. For the majority of systems, 120 Ohm termination resistors should be used on the end-devices of the transmission system, although for very short transmission lines (less than 5 feet), it may be less beneficial and may cause the errors mentioned above. By rule, include the termination resistors to your system, and if undesirable results are seen, remove the resistors. After correctly setting up the transmission system between the FP-1000 and the FP-1001, the device should be accurately identified in FieldPoint Explorer and all communication should be valid.

More detailed information about wiring and installation of the FP-1001 can be found in the user’s guide. Also, there is a detailed application note found on B&B Electronics Web site which outlines the RS-485 system more extensively.
