"Open Block Diagram" Does Nothing in LabVIEW 8.6 Subpanel Control

Primary Software:
Primary Software Version: 8.6
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am trying to view the block diagram of a VI in a subpanel control in LabVIEW 8.6.x. However, when I right-click in the subpanel control and select Open Block Diagram nothing happens. Why is this happening, and how can I display the block diagram?

Solution:

This is a known issue in LabVIEW 8.6.x, and has been fixed in LabVIEW 2009 under Corrective Action Request (CAR 124113). NI has 2 workarounds to display the block diagram of a VI in a subpanel control in LabVIEW 8.6.x.

Option 1

Do not invoke the VI to run inside the subpanel. If the VI is not running when it is loaded into the subpanel control, the user can right-click on the control and select Open Block Diagram to show the block diagram of the referenced VI. Then the user can modify the block diagram or run the VI from the block diagram window.

Users can modify the Simple Subpanel VI shipping example to display the block diagram by removing the Run VI invoke node method. See the modified shipping example attached below.

Option 2

Use a picture control to display the block diagram of the referenced VI. This effectively enables the user to view the block diagram. See the attached Picture Control VI below.

You may implement either architecture into your application to show the block diagram in a subpanel in LabVIEW 8.6. Contact your local National Instruments representative, or NI Technical Support if you have any questions.
