How Can I Manually Connect Newly Found Hardware to its Driver?
Primary Software: Driver Software
Primary Software Version: N/A
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: The Found New Hardware Wizard comes up when my computer starts, but when I select the Install the software automatically option, the wizard seems to hang. The magnifying glass just keeps spinning. How do I connect the hardware to the driver?
Solution: Sometimes even after the driver for a specific device is installed, the Found New Hardware Wizard cannot connect the driver to the hardware. If the Install the software automatically option does not work, this can be done manually by following the steps below.
- Right-click on My Computer (which is usually located on your desktop).
- Select Properties from the menu that appears.
- Select the Hardware tab.

- Click on the Device Manager button.
- In Device Manager expand National Instruments GPIB Interfaces or Data Acquisition Device (depending on what type of device you have).

- Right-click on the your device (in this case: GPIB-USB-HS) and click on Update Driver…
- Select No, not this time from the dialog box.
- Click on the Next button.
- Select the Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) option from the dialog box.
- Click the Next button.
- Select the Search for the best driver in these locations option from the dialog box.

- Click on the Browse button, and search for C:\WINDOWS\inf (or C:\WINNT\inf).
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
Note: If the Found New Hardware Wizard still cannot find the driver, try selecting the second option,
Don't search. I will choose the driver to install. Then click the
Next button.

A list of device drivers that are potentially compatible with your device should show up in the list. If no drivers appear, then the appropriate harware driver is not installed correctly (i.e. NI-DAQmx, NI-Serial, etc.). Pick an appropriate device driver and then click the
Next button.

Click the
Finish button.
