Problem: I have a laptop with a PCMCIA-GPIB card installed and I am trying to see it in the Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) of a desktop PC with a PCI-GPIB card in it. I would also like to see the desktop PC from the MAX on the laptop. Is this possible? Solution: In order to do this, you must connect the PCI-GPIB card of the desktop to the PCMCIA-GPIB card of the laptop, Once the devices are connected with the GPIB cable, in order to get each device to recognize each other’s address, enable the system controller mode on the laptop and desktop as well. With both computers running MAX, open the following on each PC:
On the desktop PC: Select Tools » NI-VISA » VISA Interactive control while in the VISA I/O tab - Expand GPIBX (PCI-GPIB) (under my computer) - Double-click on GPIBX::INTFC On the laptop: Select Tools » NI-VISA » VISA Interactive control while in the VISA I/O tab - Expand GPIBY (PCMCIA-GPIB) (under my computer) - Double-click on GPIBY::INTFC Keep both of these windows open and do not modify anything. On the desktop: Click on Scan for Instruments (address should be recognized) On the laptop: Click on Scan for Instruments (address should be recognized) See the Related Links section below for an additional method to communicate between two PCs using GPIB.
