Why Am I Seeing Kernel Panics on a Mac Pro With More Than 2.5 GB of RAM?Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-DAQmxPrimary Software Version: 8.7.1 Primary Software Fixed Version: 8.7.2 Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA, Driver Software>>NI-488.2
Problem: Why am I seeing kernel panics on a Mac Pro with more than 2.5GB of RAM with NI driver software installed? The panic message starts with something like the following:
panic(cpu 3 caller 0x0042928B): "getPhysicalSegment() out of 32b range 0x101807000, len 0x1000, class IOGeneralMemoryDescriptor"@/SourceCache/xnu/ xnu-1228.3.13/iokit/Kernel/IOMemoryDescriptor.cpp:1473 Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
Solution: There is a known issue that affects Mac Pro systems with more than 2.5GB of RAM. For the crash, com.ni.driver.nipalk will be listed as a kernel loadable module in the backtrace. To fix this issue, update to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later, and install NI driver software that is released on the August 2008 NI Device Driver distribution or equivalent versions or later. That includes NI-DAQmx 8.7.2 and NI-VISA 4.4. Related Links: Attachments:
