When I double-click on my Multisim file it no longer automatically opens in a Multisim window.

Primary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Multisim
Primary Software Version: N/A
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: I had NI Multisim and the free NI Multisim ADI Edition installed on my machine. I uninstalled one of the applications, and now Multisim files are no longer automatically associated with either form of the Multisim application.

Solution: Microsoft Windows associates files in the order in which they are installed upon your machine. For example, if you;
  • Download and install the NI Multisim ADI part evaluation edition.
  • Purchase and install the fully functional NI Multisim (student, educational, base, full or Power Pro editions).
Windows will automatically associate any Multisim file with the last version software of the software that you install. Therefore, if you double-click on any schematic file (with an .msX extension) after the previously described install example, Windows will open up the fully functional NI Multisim software.

In certain situations this file association can be lost and cause the above reported error. For example, if one was to:
  • Right-click on a schematic file and select Open With >> Choose Program.
  • Select Multisim ADI Edition as the file association.
  • Uninstall Multisim ADI Edition.
Windows will lose the file association with Multisim, and be unable to properly revert back to the purchased Multisim software. This is because the user-defined association is saved in Windows, and will not automatically change to a default setting.

In this situation, the issue can be resolved by either of the following procedures:

Solution Procedure 1
  1. Select Start >> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select National Instruments Software and click on the Change/Remove button.
  4. Select NI Circuit Design Suite 10 in the NI Products list.
  5. Click on the Repair button and follow the Windows dialog instructions.
Solution Procedure 2
  1. Follow steps 1 to 4 above.
  2. Select the Remove button to uninstall Multisim/NI Circuit Design Suite.
  3. Reinstall Multisim/NI Circuit Design Suite from the original CD.
Windows will now properly associate Multisim files with your purchased application.
