Sending Permission Requests Without Directly Using a Network Installer

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:

I already installed my software, so I cannot launch a Network Installer. Or, I choose not to use a network installer. How can I independently launch the part of the network installer that points my computer to the Volume License Manager (VLM) server for license check-out, and sends a permission request for a specific license?

Solution:

  1. Create a Network Installer as you normally would (see Creating a Network Installer in VLM). The Source software you use to create the network installer is irrelevant.
  2. Create a separate Configuration for each license permission, or combination of license permissions, that a client PC should request (For our purpose, it is irrelevant whether these permissions are appropriate to the Source software we are using to create the network installer). Name each Configuration to reflect either:
    • Which groups in your company should send these permission requests (i.e. Fourth Floor Engineering), or
    • What licenses will be requested (i.e. LabVIEW Pro and TestStand).
For each Configuration you add, VLM will create a separate Client folder that contains vlmclient.exe. When launched, vlmclient.exe will send the permission requests.
  3. Extract each Client folder from the resulting Network Installer, rename the Client folder according to its parent folder, and place it together with the other renamed Client folders in the location where you distribute NI software.
  4. Instruct your users to navigate to the appropriate renamed Client folder and launch vlmclient.exe. The user will be prompted to enter their information. If this is successful, National Instruments License Manager will point towards the VLM server, and vlmclient.exe will send a permission request to VLM.
Note: In order to automate installation, please see How Can I Create a Silent Install for NI Products Managed by NI Volume License Manager? or Requesting Permissions from VLM during Mass Software Installations.
