Changing the Logical Name of a Switch in an NI Switch Executive Configuration

Primary Software: Switch Executive
Primary Software Version: 1.0.2
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I would like to change the logical name of a switch in my NI Switch Executive configuration but have been unable to figure out how to do so.

If I add a switch to a NI Switch Executive configuration and subsequently change the logical name of the switch in the IVI configuration, this will invalidate the configuration and NI Switch Executive correctly reports the error. If I delete the switch from the configuration and add it again with the new logical name, then all of my configuration information for this device is lost.

How can I change the logical name of a switch in my NI Switch Executive configuration, while preserving other configuration settings, such as channel aliases, hardwires, routes, and route groups?

Solution:
The logical name of a switch in an NI Switch Executive Virtual Device can be changed by manually editing the XML configuration file.
  1. Export the switch configuration by right clicking on the device under Devices and Interfaces and select Export, or by pressing the Export button in the menu bar at the top of the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) window.

  2. Open the resulting XML configuration file with a text-editor such as Notepad and replace any instances of the old logical name with the new name. You can do this by right clicking on the XML file and selecting Open With » Notepad from the shortcut menus. You can then press CTRL+H to find all instances of the old logical name and replace them with the new logical name. These steps can be seen in the images below.

  3. Create a new NI Switch Executive Virtual Device and select Import configuration from file under Creation Mode.

  4. The new NI Switch Executive Virtual Device will contain all configuration information from the previous device.
