Why Do I Get An Error When I Try To Create a VISA Alias For My USB-8451?

Hardware: Industrial Communications>>CAN>>USB-CAN

Problem:
I am trying to create a VISA alias for my USB-8451, and if I use an alias that I previously used for a different 8451, I get an error telling me that the alias conflicts with another device. How do I fix this?

Solution:
When you create a VISA alias for the 8451, VISA remembers the alias even after you unplug the device. This removes the need to recreate the alias if you have to use the same device again. To get rid of the error, you will need to delete the old 8451 alias entry from Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). To do this, follow the steps below:
  • From the "Tools" menu in MAX, select NI-VISA» VISA Options
  • In the resulting window, select "Aliases" under "General Settings"
  • Right-click on the existing alias that you want to use, click on "Clear Alias", and save

Now, you should be able to create the VISA alias for your device.
