Archived: What is the Name of the Active NI-DAQ Configuration File in Measurement & Automation Explorer?

This document has been archived and is no longer updated by National Instruments

Note: This page is about NI-DAQ also known as Traditional NI-DAQ (Legacy). NI-DAQmx replaced Traditional NI-DAQ (Legacy) in 2003. NI strongly recommends using NI-DAQmx for new designs and migrating existing Traditional NI-DAQ (Legacy) applications to NI-DAQmx. Please review the Getting Started with NI-DAQmx guide for more information on migration.

Primary Software:
Primary Software Version: 4.4
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-DAQ, Driver Software>>NI-DAQmx

Problem:
Prior to Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) 2.0, MAX would list the name of the active NI-DAQ configuration. How can I find the name of the active NI-DAQ configuration file for versions of MAX 2.0 and later?

Solution:
Although MAX 2.0 or later no longer list the active NI-DAQ configuration file, you can still find this information saved in a registry key in Windows operating systems. To find the file name in the registry, do the following:

Caution: Making any changes to the Windows Registry can potentially cause irreparable damage to your system.
  1. Open the Windows Registry Editor by going to Start » Run. Enter regedit (or regedt32 if you are using Windows NT/2000).
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\National Instruments\NI-DAQ\CurrentVersion\Configuration Manager
  3. Select the above key.
  4. The name of the active NI-DAQ configuration file will be on the right side of the Registry Editor window next to the CurrentFile string.
LabVIEW Users:
LabVIEW 6.0 added VIs that allow you to access your registry (available on the Functions palette under Advanced » Windows Registry Access VIs). The attached VI, Get NI-DAQ Config File Path.vi, uses these VIs to programmatically check the registry entry and return the path to and name of the active NI-DAQ configuration file. You must have LabVIEW 6.0 or greater to use the VI.

If you have an older version of LabVIEW and would like more information about upgrading to the newest version, please visit the National Instruments Upgrade Advisor.
