How Do I Create a Pulse Train with a FieldPoint CTR Module?

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-FieldPoint
Primary Software Version: 4.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>FP-CTR-500, FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>FP-CTR-502

Problem: I am using an FP-CTR-50x module. How can I create a pulse train with this module?

Solution: Follow these steps to set up your FP-CTR module to generate a pulse train:
  1. Run the FieldPoint Explorer (FieldPoint version 3.0.2 or earlier) or run Measurement and Automation Explorer (FieldPoint version 4.0)
  2. Right-click on your FP-CTR module and select "Edit this device". This brings up the Device Configuration window.

  3. Click on the "Channel Confguration" option.

  4. Now you must define the counter output. Under the "Channels" option change the counter type to "Type 3: Discrete Output".

  5. Click the check box for the desired output channel.

  6. In the "Attributes" field select the "Output Source" attribute and change the value to "Counter Channel 0".

  7. Select the "Output Mode" attribute and change the value to "Toggle, reset off".

  8. You now must have Counter 0 output the correct frequency. Under "Channels" change the counter type to "Type 1: Count Input".

  9. Click the check box for "Counter 0".

  10. Select the count source Attribute and change the value to "1 KHz Reference". For faster pulse trains you can select an external source or the 32 KHz Reference.

  11. Select the terminal count attribute and set it so that you get the desired frequency. For instance, "100" would divide the 1 KHz Reference by 200 (because you are toggling the output on AND off every 100 counts), resulting in a 5 Hz output.
