How do I Upgrade from the Older "NI-6653 Driver Software" to NI-Sync?

Problem:
I have an NI PXI-6653 timing and synchronization module. I first obtained this product prior to 2004 and have been using the driver called "NI-6653." This was the first software package available for the NI PXI-6653 and was intended only for applications involving synchronization of multiple Dynamic Signal Acquisition (DSA) devices. I would like to upgrade to the more recent NI-Sync driver. NI-Sync provides improved examples and documentation for DSA and also adds support to synchronize other NI Measurement devices.

What is the proper procedure to perform this software upgrade?

Solution:
You will first need to remove the existing association between the NI-6653 driver and your 6653 device. This is done by following these two steps:

Use the Windows Device Manager to delete any entries for your PXI-6653 devices
Delete the following file: \WinNT\inf\ni6653_NT5.inf

You may also remove the following files/folders (if they exist) that will no longer be needed:

\VXIPnP\WinNT\bin\ni6653.dll
\VXIPnP\WinNT\NI PXI-6653 for DSA
\VXIPnP\WinNT\include\ni6653.h
\VXIPnP\WinNT\include\NI_PXI_6653_for_DSA.h
\VXIpnp\WinNT\lib\msc\ni6653.lib
labview\examples\NI PXI-6653 for DSA
labview\instr.lib\NI PXI-6653 for DSA

After you have removed the NI-6653 driver, you can download and install the NI-Sync driver available at the link at the end of this document.
