How to Wire the Shield Pins of My 994x Terminal Blocks Hardware: CompactRIO>>Analog Input Modules>>NI 9237
Problem: I see the shield terminal on my 994x terminal block but I don’t know how to use it. Solution: National Instruments sells shielded RJ50 cables for use with devices such as the NI 9237 strain module. These cables are both shielded and twisted to protect from noise. To connect a 994x terminal block to a module, you need an RJ50 cable that has a ten pin modular plug on both sides. If this cable is shielded, it will have shiny, metallic material around the plastic connector. This metallic material is connected to the shield that surrounds the wires inside the cable. This shield is grounded at the module side (not the sensor side). This grounding is done by simply plugging in the RJ50 cable. The shield pins of the 994x terminal blocks are internally connected to cable’s shield. An example of how to use these shield pins is having a shielded cable (some type of multiple wire cable with a shield) connecting a 994x module and a strain gauge. The wires from the gauge are secured to their specific pins and shield of the cable is fed into the shield pin. This will ground the cable back at the strain module.
