How Do I Configure the NI TPC Service on My Touch Panel Device?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Touch Panel Module
Primary Software Version: 8.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: Industrial Communications>>HMI and Industrial PC

Problem:
I want to use the NI TPC Service that was introduced in version 8.5 of the LabVIEW Touch Panel Module to deploy, run, and debug my Touch Panel applications.  How do I configure my Touch Panel device and the LabVIEW Touch Panel Module to use the NI TPC Service?

Solution:
You must install the NI TPC Service on the Touch Panel target before you can use the NI TPC Service.

Installing Support for the NI TPC Service on a Touch Panel target
  1. Depending on which type of target you are using, use FTP or an external storage device to copy NITPCService.cab from the labview\PDA\Utilities\NITPCService\ARM directory or labview\PDA\Utilities\NITPCService\x86 directory to any location on the touch panel device.

Note: Refer to the KnowledgeBase article linked below for the most recent information about configuring NI TPC devices to use FTP.  For third-party devices, refer to the device documentation.

  2. Run the .cab file on the touch panel device to install the NI TPC Service.
  3. For NI TPC devices, use the default installation location. Tap the Enter key on the Input Panel to accept the default installation location. For third-party devices, install the service in the non-volatile directory on the device.
  4. Use the NI TPC Service Manager to configure the service to run on the touch panel device.
    1. Select Start » All Programs»National Instruments » NI TPC Service » NI TPC Service Manager 1.0 to launch the NI TPC Service Manager.  The manager checks the status of the NI TPC Service and displays status information.
    2. Tap the Start button to start the NI TPC Service if the NI TPC Service is not running.

Once the TPC Service has been installed and started on the touch panel, configuring the LabVIEW Touch Panel project on the PC will allow you to deploy and debug applications from anywhere on the same subnet.

Configuring the LabVIEW Touch Panel Module to use the NI TPC Service

  1. Create a new project by selecting File » New... » Empty Project, or open an existing project.
  2. Create a new touch panel target by right clicking on the Project in the Project Explorer and selecting New » Targets and Devices...
  3. In the Add Targets and Devices window, select New target or device and select the Touch Panel device.
  4. Select the device type from the drop down menu and click OK.
  5. In the Project Explorer, right click on the Touch Panel Device and select Properties.
  6. In the Touch Panel Target Properties, click on the Connection drop down box and select NI TPC.
  7. In the Touch Panel Device IP Address, input the IP address of the touch panel device, which can be seen from the NI TPC Service window running on the touch panel.  Click on Test to test the communication between your computer and the touch panel device.
  8. Save the project.

Once the NI TPC Service has been configured, you can deploy and run applications as you normally would over an ActiveSync connection.  See the Getting Started with LabVIEW Touch Panel Module for Windows CE Guide, linked below, for more informaiton on running Touch Panel applications.
