Protocols for DataSocket and DataSocket Server

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>DataSocket
Primary Software Version: 4.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:

What protocols can I use with the DataSocket activeX controls, VIs and functions? What protocols can the DataSocket Server use?

Solution:

When using DataSocket controls, VIs, and functions, you can use the following protocols:

  • DSTP - (DataSocket Transfer Protocol) The native protocol of DataSocket connections, which involves reading from or writing to a DataSocket server
  • OPC - (Windows OLE for Process Control) Involves reading from or writing to an OPC server
  • logos - An internal National Instruments technology used by several products including FieldPoint, Lookout, and LabVIEW DSC (DataLogging and Supervisory Control Module)
  • FTP - (File Transfer Protocol) Use this protocol to specify a file from which to read data
  • file - Use this protocol to provide a link to a local or network file

The protocol used depends on the format of the URL string input. In LabVIEW 7.1 or earlier, refer to chapter 18 of the LabVIEW User Manual (linked below) for specific URL formats. In LabVIEW 8.0 or later, refer to the Sharing Live Data Programmatically topic of the LabVIEW Help (linked below).

The DataSocket Server supports only the DSTP protocol. It functions as a connection between any National Instruments product with DataSocket connectivity, including LabVIEW (on various platforms), LabVIEW Real-Time, LabVIEW DSC, CVI, Measurement Studio, and Lookout. To create an OPC server with National Instruments software, you must use the LabVIEW DSC module or Lookout.
