Problem: What is Enhanced Write Filter (EWF)? Can I use it with Windows XP Embedded on National Instruments' Touch Panels such as the NI TPC-2012? Solution: The Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) is an option in Windows XP Embedded which protects a volume from being written to. During normal operations, generated data is written to the same location as the operating system information. This can potentially cause corruption if the data is written to an area that has been reserved for use by another application. EWF, when enabled, redirects the data that is generated to a different hardware location, either RAM or disk space. This allows the operating system to remain unchanged from one boot to the next. National Instruments’ Touch Panels that run Windows XP Embedded do have the option for EWF, however it is not enabled by default. NI TPCs only support RAM EWF. More information about EWF can be on the MSDN page Using the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) in Windows XP Embedded.
