Problem:
National Instruments has identified a problem in NI-DAQmx 8.6.0f12 that in some cases may corrupt your configuration data in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) when upgrading NI-DAQmx, or another driver that updates NI-DAQmx. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this may cause. National Instruments is committed to your total satisfaction and to maintaining your confidence in our products.

For a full description of this issue, please refer to the KnowledgeBase article listed in the Related Links section.

Please carefully review the following information to determine whether you should take action in connection with this issue.

Solution:
How to Determine if a PXI or Desktop Real-Time System is Affected
If you have not upgraded your PXI or desktop Real-Time system to NI-DAQmx 8.6.0f12, you are not affected by this issue. NI-DAQmx 8.6.0f12 was available starting November 2007, primarily as part of the November 2007 NI Device Drivers.

If you are not sure which version of NI-DAQmx is installed on your target, follow these steps.
  1. Open an FTP session to your Real-Time target. For instructions on how to do this, please see
FTP Transfer of Files Between Host and Real-Time Targets in MAX.

  2. Copy /ni-rt/system/niswchdd.dll to your host system's desktop.

  3. Right-click on niswchdd.dll on your desktop and select Properties from the context menu.

  4. On Windows 2000/XP, Select the Version tab. On Windows Vista, select the Details tab.

  5. Select the Product Version property. If the product version is 1.13.0f1, then NI-DAQmx 8.6.0f12 is installed on your Real-Time system and the system is affected by the issue. Please follow the instructions below to return your system to working state.
If, for some reason, you are not able to determine the version of NI-DAQmx or niswchdd.dll installed on your system, we recommend you assume your system is affected and follow the instructions below.

How to Return to a Working State if a System is Affected
There are two options to return your system to a working state. You can either delete your Real-Time target configuration settings OR format your entire Real-Time target.

How to Delete Your Real-Time Target Configuration Settings
  1. Make sure your host system has a version of NI-DAQmx OTHER THAN 8.6.0f12. If you do not already have access to another version, refer to How to Request Replacement Drivers below.

  2. Reboot the target into Safe Mode. Consult the user manual for your Real-Time target controller for instructions on how to reboot into Safe Mode.

  3. Uninstall NI-DAQmx 8.6.0f12 from your Real-Time target.

  4. Return the target to Safe Mode.

  5. Open an FTP session to your Real-Time target. For instructions on how to do this, please see
FTP Transfer of Files Between Host and Real-Time Targets in MAX.

  6. Delete all of the following files:
    /ni-rt/system/config3.mxs
    /ni-rt/system/config3.mxd
    /ni-rt/system/max.ini
    /ni-rt/system/mxs.mxr
    /ni-rt/system/mxsjar.ini
    /ni-rt/system/*.mx5
(all files with the .mx5 extension in the directory)
/ni-rt/system/Last/* (all files in the directory)

  7. Install NI-DAQmx to your Real-Time target from your host system.

  8. Reboot your Real-Time target without Safe Mode enabled. Consult the user manual for your Real-Time target controller for instructions on how to do this.
How to Format Your Entire Real-Time Target
  1. Make sure your host system has a version of NI-DAQmx OTHER THAN 8.6.0f12. If you do not already have access to another version, refer to How to Request Replacement Drivers below.

  2. Format your target. On most targets you can do this in MAX by right-clicking on your Real-Time target and selecting Format. Consult the MAX Help for instructions on how to do this on other targets.

  3. Install NI-DAQmx and other drivers onto your target.
