I am using NI-VISA 3.2 or earlier, and I am trying to change the stop bit value for a serial port in Measurement & Automation Explorer by doing the following:
  1. Selecting my serial port from under Devices and Interfaces.
  2. Selecting Open VISA Session.
  3. On the Template tab, navigating to the Property Node (Write) or viSetAttribute tab.
  4. Selecting the property/attribute as Serial Stop Bits or VI_ATTR_ASRL_STOP_BITS.
  5. Setting a new value for this property.
  6. Selecting Execute.
However, when I select Execute, I receive a return value of error 0xBFFF001E.

Why does this happen, and how can I resolve this issue?

The error means that the system is unable to process your request. This is because there are only 3 supported values for this property: 10 for 1 bit; 15 for 1.5 bits; 20 for 2 bits.

You can also set this property programmatically in LabVIEW by following these steps:
  1. Place the VISA Configure Serial Port VI on your block diagram.
  2. Wire a control or constant to the stop bits terminal. It will automatically appear as the correct bit value.
  3. Make sure that VI executes before VISA writes or reads.
If instead of error 0xBFFF001E, you are seeing error 0xBFFF003A when attempting to set a new stop bit value, see the KnowledgeBase article linked below.
