Maximum Transfer/Baud Rate with PCMCIA Serial Communication Devices

Hardware: Serial>>RS-232, Serial>>RS-485

Problem:
I have a PCMCIA serial communication device that I am trying to configure in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). When I go to the COM port and click on the Port Settings tab, it gives me the option to select my Baud Rate. When I try to set the Baud Rate to the Max Transfer Rate indicated by the newest catalog (2004) and the NI-Serial Help file, I receive an error message saying This device does not support a baud rate of <X>.Please type in or choose a different baud rate for this device. Why can't I use the Max Transfer Rate of my device?

Solution:
The Max Transfer Rate specifications of the PCMCIA Serial Communication Devices changed in 2003. The reason you are seeing this error message is because your device was manufactured before this specification was upgraded. The table below shows the Max Transfer Rate specifications of the PCMCIA Serial Communication Devices before and after 2003.

  Max Transfer Rate
Device Prior to 2003 2003 and Later
PCMCIA-232 115.2kb/s 921.6kb/s
PCMCIA-232/2 115.2kb/s 921.6kb/s
PCMCIA-232/4 115.2kb/s 115.2kb/s
PCMCIA-485 115.2kb/s 921.6kb/s
PCMCIA-485/2 115.2kb/s 921.6kb/s
