How Can I Remote Desktop into My PXI System Other Than With Windows Remote Desktop?

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers

Problem:
I have a PXI controller running headlessly that I would like to control remotely over a network.  I cannot use the Windows Remote Desktop feature because the PXI system is running an operating system that doesn't support it (such as Linux or a non-Business version of Windows Vista).  Are there any other options?

Solution:
TightVNC* is a free, cross-platform utility application that works similarly to the Windows Remote Desktop feature.

The major advantages are:
  • It is licensed under the GNU General Public License, and as such is completely free of cost
  • It allows multiple users to view the remote desktop simultaneously (Windows Remote Desktop is limited to only one user at a time)
The major disadvantages are:
  • The screen updates slowly
  • A monitor must be connected to the PXI controller in order for you to install the TightVNC server application
For more information, please visit the TightVNC page for more information.

*Note: TightVNC is not a National Instruments product and as such, it is used at your own risk.  This article is provided for informational purposes only.
