Problem: I want to use LabVIEW to analyze signals from my Fluke 45 dual display multimeter. I saw two versions of the instrument drivers on National Instrument's website. What's the difference and which should I use? Solution: There are two different drivers available from National Instrument's website: the IVI driver and the Plug and Play driver. The Plug and Play driver supports both GPIB and Serial interfaces while the IVI driver only supports GPIB interfaces. The IVI driver offers interchangeability to different instruments that are in the same IVI Class. It implements functions and attributes for controlling an instrument within a specified class, as defined by the IVI foundation. IVI drivers also have the simulation feature that allows you to simulate the instrument in LabVIEW. The Plug and Play driver uses VISA protocol and only drives a specific instrument. In this case it will only work with Fluke 45 and, if you have multiple devices in the same system, you will need different instrument drivers for all of them.
