How Do I Configure an Instrument to Communicate via TCP/IP in MAX?

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Primary Software Version: 4.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation Explorer

Problem:
I have an instrument that can communicate via TCP/IP that I would like to configure in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) and program with VISA. How do I add the device in MAX?

Solution:
To add the device in MAX:
  1. Right-click on Devices and Interfaces and select Create New.
  2. Select TCP/IP Resource from the list.

  3. You will need to know if your instrument meets the VXI-11 LAN specification. If it does, select the VXI-11 LAN Instrument radio button, and you can choose to manually enter the Hostname and LAN Device Name or browse for TCP/IP devices on the subnet. If it does not meet the VXI-11 LAN specification, select the Raw Socket radio button and enter the Hostname and Port Number as specified by the manual for your instrument.

  4. You can then give your TCP/IP Resource a VISA alias. Follow the rest of the wizard’s instructions.
  5. You should see your device listed under VISA TCP/IP Resources.
Now you can program your instrument with VISA by using the VISA resource name or VISA alias.

Note: VXI-11 protocol is fully supported with NI-VISA 2.6 or higher
