Why Can't My GPIB-ENET or GPIB-ENET/100 Device Respond To Pings?

Hardware: GPIB>>External Controllers/Convertors>>GPIB-ENET

Problem: I have my GPIB-ENET (or GPIB-ENET/100) device configured with a valid IP address in MAX, but it times out when I try to ping it. Why won't my device respond to pings?

Solution: Simply having a GPIB-ENET device recognized in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) does not necessarily mean that the device has been configured correctly to an IP address and ping requests may still timeout. It is a good idea to check the IP configuration of the computer the GPIB device is connected to and make sure that the IP address set for the GPIB device resides on the same subnet as that of the computer.

To do this, open up a command window (choose Start->Run... type 'cmd') and type 'ipconfig'. You should now see the IP Address and Subnet Mask information for your machine (see image below). The subnet mask is used to identify the range of addresses in the subnet. A bitwise AND is performed on each bit of the subnet mask with the IP address. To make sure that the GPIB device is communicating on the same subnet address, we need to do a binary AND on the mask and the IP address. This is most easily done by first converting the subnet mask and IP address to a binary representation. Then perform a bitwise AND of each bit, and this will yield your subnet address. Any group of computers with the same subnet address exists on the same subnet.

Before assigning an IP address to the device, make sure that the IP address is available. Do a ping on that IP address and make sure no other device has already been assigned that IP address. If that IP address is available, then go ahead and assign the GPIB device that address and try pinging it again to see if it responds.
