Receiving Error when accessing properties of a Serial Device through a USB Serial Adapter

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Primary Software Version: 4.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Hardware: Instrument Connectivity Other>>USB>>USB-232/2

Problem:
I’m using a third party serial device via a third party USB Serial adapter.  I am able to configure and communicate with it under hyper-terminal.  When testing the device in MAX, I am unable to change items such as the Baud Rate and Parity Bits.  The error I receive is 0xBFFF0072.

Solution:
When using an USB Serial Adapter, a virtual COM port is created.  Due to the third party nature of the device, not all VISA functions are supported.  If you need to change the communication properties, try using an instrument property node
  1. Create a COM port constant by dragging the serial device interface (e.g. COM1), found in Measurement and Automation ExplorerDevices and Interfaces ⇒ Serial & Parallel, into LabVIEW block diagram
  2. Right click the COM port constant and select Create ⇒Property for Instr. Class Serial Settings
  3. Place the property node at the beginning of your program, before any reads/writes If this does not work, you may need to consider acquiring a National Instrument adapter, which does not have the limitations that third party devices do.
