Error: Data Exceed The Maximum Board Size (2m X 2m) When Importing a DXF File

Primary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Ultiboard
Primary Software Version: 10.1.1
Primary Software Fixed Version:
Secondary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Ultiboard

Problem:

I am trying to import a DXF file to the board outline layer and the dimension is smaller than 2m x 2m but when I import my file I get the error message as shown below:

Solution:

In some CAD applications, the origin does not exist and there is a potential to import your DXF file where the drawing is very far from the Ultiboard origin, this results in a design area larger than the maximum supported board size.  Since DXF file does not contain any unit, you should import the file using a smaller unit than what was intended and if the file imports, you can correct the origin location and generate a new DXF file.  The attached DXF example is in inches, download the file to your machine and follow the below steps:

  1. Select File»Import»DXF
  2. Click on the Look in: drop down arrow and navigate to the location where you saved the DXF file, highlight the file and select the Open button
  3. Click on the Merge import data into existing layer:  radio button and select Board Outline from the pull down list
  4. Select mil from the Interpret units in file as:
  5. Press F9 on your keyboard to zoom out until you will see the design origin, notice how far it is from the board outline.  Place your mouse pointer near the lower left corner of the board outline and press F8 on the keyboard to zoom back in
  6. Select Design»Set Reference Point, place the reference point near board outline
  7. Select File»Export»DXF»Properties
  8. Highlight Board Outline under Available Layer area and click on the right pointing arrow to move Board Outline to the Layer to Process area. Click the OK button
  9. Click on the Export button to export the DXF file
  10. Enter a name in the File Name area and press the Save button
  11. In the Design Toolbox double click on Board Outline to make it the active layer
  12. Select Edit»Select All (Ctrl+A) to select the DXF data imported in step 4 and then press Delete on your keyboard.
  13. Repeat step 1 to 4 but this time select inches
  14. You can now use the correct DXF
