[c]FP-DIO-550 Will Not Power On

Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>cFP-DIO-550, FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>FP-DIO-550

Problem:
I have a [c]FP-DIO-550 module in my FieldPoint system. I notice that when I apply power to the system, all modules, including the [c]FP-DIO-550, blink momentarily, but the [c]FP-DIO-550 always powers off afterwards. I tried to add the module manually under Remote Systems in MAX, but because I could not find the module in the list, I was unable to access it this way either. How can I recognize this module in my system?

Solution:
This is a known issue with some [c]FP-DIO-550 modules, which is a result of a bug in the firmware on the modules. The bug only affects revision D and earlier [c]FP-DIO-550 modules and revision E and earlier (classic) FP-DIO-550 modules. The particular revision is identified by the letter within the part number. For example, a revision E FP-DIO-550 module will have part number 190993E-01. This issue does not exist on later revisions of the module.

If you hot swap an affected (classic) FP-DIO-550 module into your FieldPoint bank (i.e. insert the module after the bank is powered on), the module may initialize correctly. Inserting the module quickly will usually cause the module to initialize properly, while inserting the module slowly will typically cause it to fail. Although its behavior is unpredictable, once the module is initialized, it will continue to function correctly until the bank loses power.

To address this problem, there are two options:
  1. This is the better option. However, it does require a cFP-21xx controller and LabVIEW RT 7.1 (or higher) installed on the host computer and cFP controller. This fix will not work with (classic) FP-DIO-550 modules. There is an embedded VI that you can run on the controller which will update the firmware and get your system up and running in the least amount of time. Please download the attached .zip file and follow the directions in Readme.doc.
  2. You can return the module to National Instruments for the firmware update. Since this is a known issue, you will not be charged for this service. In this case, please contact a National Instruments Customer Service Representative at 1-877-493-2406 to receive an RMA number and begin the repair process.
For help with the update utility or additional technical questions regarding this issue, please call 1-877-493-2406 and ask to speak with an Applications Engineer.
