Getting Started with NI VLM - Adding Computers and Setting Permissions Manually

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.1.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
How do I add computers and set permissions manually with NI Volume License Manager (VLM)?

Solution:
Computers not connected to the network on which the NI VLM is installed cannot take advantage of volume license installers and will thus have to be added manually. On a client machine disconnected from the VLM's network, you will need the client's computer name and computer ID. On the other hand, on a client machine connected to the network, you will only need the client's computer name. To find computer name and ID NI License Manager on the client computer, navigate to Start » Programs » National Instruments » NI License Manager. Then click the Display Computer Information button to obtain the computer name and computer ID.

Once you have obtained the client computer name (and computer ID if necessary), open NI VLM, and follow these steps:
  1. Click the Add Computer button. Enter the client computer's information in the subsequent dialog box. (The fields in the owner section of the information tab are optional and can be used for your own record keeping.)
  2. Select to the Permissions tab, which lists available software packages included in your Volume License Agreement (VLA)
  3. Place a checkmark next to each software package that the client computer will need to use.
  4. Select to the Users tab.
  5. Add all users connected to the computer. Click OK, and repeat this process for each client computer.
  6. Click Apply Changes to refresh the server with these new settings and permissions. Note: Failure to apply the changes will result in the changes being lost.

You can also use the NI VLM Import Utility to help you gather and enter the client computer information. NI VLM includes the NI VLM Import Utility. (See KnowledgeBase 3G0GJU6E: NI Volume License Manager Import Utility also linked at the end of this document.)
