Changing the External Hard Drive Letter Names on PXI SystemHardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers
Problem: I am using the PXI-8252 to connect an external hard drive to my PXI system. The PXI system is controlled by a PXI-8186 LabVIEW RT controller. How are the letter names of the external drives determined? Can I modify the drive letter names? Solution: LabVIEW 7.1 RT When a new external FireWire (IEEE-1394) drive is detected by the operating system, it is assigned a drive letter. The first drive letter is G. If another drive is connected, the operating system assigns the drive letter H, and so on. The drive letter assignments are stored in a text configuration file, which is stored in c:\ni-rt\system\partititions.ini. The driver letter assignments persist between reboots regardless of plug and play order. To change the drive letter for a storage unit, you must edit the configuration file manually and reboot the system. Note: Drive letters A-F are reserved by the operating system and cannot be used. LabVIEW 8.0 RT The operating system does not remember the names of the external drives. It assigns the next available drive letter to the external drive. It does not have a partitions.ini file.
