Can I Edit and Create Hierarchical Data Format (HDF5) files in LabVIEW?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Base Package
Primary Software Version: 6.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
The Hierarchical Data Format (HDF5) was developed by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. This new data format was designed as a universal method to store scientific data. Is there a way to edit files of this format in LabVIEW?

Solution:
A toolkit has been designed for LabVIEW 6.0 and higher, which makes it possible to edit files stored in Hierarchical Data format within LabVIEW. To edit data files of this type you must download and install the toolkit attached below. Please adhere to the following installation instructions:

Note: These VIs only work with versions 1.4.x of HDF5. They do not work with versions 1.6.x.

Requirements:
  • LabVIEW 6.0 or higher

Installation:
  1. Click on the attachment below, and download sfpFile.exe to your machine.
  2. Close LabVIEW if it is running.
  3. Run the self-extracting ZIP file.
  4. At the prompt, navigate to your <LabVIEW>\instr.lib directory. This is typically C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW x.x\instr.lib
  5. Add \Soft Front Panel File to the end of the directory selected.
  6. Extract the files.
  7. Navigate to the Soft Front Panel File folder you just created. Take the three dlls (HDF5_2_LV.dll, hdf5dll.dll and zlib.dll) out of the folder and move them to your C:\Windows\System directory.
  8. The next time you start LabVIEW, the VIs will be shown under the Instrument I/O»Instrument Drivers»Soft Front Panel I/O palette.

Removal:
  1. Close LabVIEW if it is running.
  2. Delete the "[LabVIEW]\instr.lib\Soft Front Panel File directory.
