Problem: Are there any background communications that occur between a FieldPoint Controller and host PC apart from what a user programs? Solution: Part of the protocol developed for [c]FieldPoint includes a periodic communication to check the state of the network (to verify that network cables are plugged in, for example). A packet of information is sent across the network once every 10 seconds. This periodic communication is usually referred to as the FieldPoint "heartbeat". This heartbeat will only occur if there is a subscriber to a service running on a FieldPoint controller. For example, if a shared variable is being monitored and is deployed on a controller, then the heartbeat is active. In this case, a subscriber (PC or another FieldPoint module) is monitoring a service (shared variable) on a controller. Because a "connection" exists between two different targets, the heartbeat is active. Related Links: Attachments:
