Controlling a Piezo Electric Stage with a PCI-73xx Motion ControllerHardware: Motion Control>>Controllers>>PCI-7344
Problem: I am looking at purchasing a piezo electric motion stage. This stage requires a pulse width modulated (PWM) input signal to control the speed at which the stage moves. Is it possible to control this type of stage with a National Instruments motion controller? Solution: Yes, with an appropriate motor amplifier, a National Instruments motion controller can control this type of stage. The motion controllers are not able to directly output an appropriate PWM signal to control these types of motors. Instead, you would need to purchase a third party motor amplifier that takes in servo control signals and outputs a PWM signal to the stage. Servo Control Signals that will work with the 734x and 735x series of motion controllers include analog torque control, analog velocity control, and p-command mode. The 733x series of motion controllers cannot be used for this type of application, as they are not designed for servo control. If you are going to purchase a motor amplifier for this purpose, you should verify that it can accept one of the above servo control signals from a motion controller and output appropriate PWM signals for the stage that you have selected.
