Can I Synchronize the NI 447x with NI-CAN Devices?

Hardware: Industrial Communications>>CAN>>PXI-8461/2, Industrial Communications>>CAN>>NI CAN Interfaces (Series 2), Industrial Communications>>CAN>>PXI-8461/1, Industrial Communications>>CAN>>PCI-CAN/XS2 Series 2, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PXI-4471, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PXI-4472B, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PXI-4472, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PCI-4472, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PCI-4471, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>PXI-4474, Modular Instruments>>Dynamic Signal Acquisition and Analysis (DSA)>>NI 4472 for IEEE 1394

Problem: Is it possible to synchronize a PXI-4472 and CAN device? There is an example for the synchronization of a PXI-446x device and a PXI-8461 Series 2 CAN card, but this example states it can only be used for 446x series. Why can’t I use a 447x series card instead?

Solution: It is not possible to synchronize the NI 447x cards with NI-CAN cards. The PXI-4472 cannot synchronize to the 10 MHz backplane clock (PXI_CLK10) as the 446x can. To synchronize 447x devices, you must share the sample clock timebase to the slave 447x cards. This sample clock timebase is not a "constant" frequency, meaning it changes to be the needed frequency to acquire your data. Even if the sample clock was specified such that the sample clock timebase would be the 10 or 20 MHz needed by the CAN cards to set as its master timebase, the CAN card only accepts the timebase signal on PXI_Trig7. The NI 447x can only export the oversample clock timebase to the Star Trigger terminal.
