Why Does My System Crash (or Blue Screen) During or Just After Installation of NI Driver Software?

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-Motion/FlexMotion
Primary Software Version: 7.2
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-DAQ, Driver Software>>NI-DAQmx, Driver Software>>NI-SWITCH, Driver Software>>NI-VISA, Driver Software>>NI-DAQmx Base, Driver Software>>NI-SCOPE

Problem:
During or just after the installation of NI-DAQ 8.1.0, NI-Visa 3.6, NI-Motion 7.3, NI-SCOPE 3.1, NI-ELVIS 3.0, NI-Switch 3.1, NI-DAQmxBase 2.0.1, or the May 2006 Driver CD, I receive a blue screen. Why is this happening, and how can I be sure that my installation of software is ok?

Solution:
When the NI Registration Wizard is installed, it will check for possible new hardware installations over the next 6 computer reboots. It will do this check once a minute for the first ten minutes after a reboot. In order to perform these checks the NI Registration Wizard loads and unloads core driver components that may be upgraded by some of the drivers listed above. If the NI Registration Wizard runs during or after a new driver installation, but before the system is rebooted, it could cause a system crash (usually in the form of a blue screen), because some components of the driver require a reboot to initialize..
  • If the system crash happens after the installation, simply restart the machine. After a reboot, the driver components will be fully initialized, and you should no longer see a system crash. Additionally, since the crash is caused by some of the driver components not being initialized, and not a defective installation, the software installation is unaffected.

  • If the system crash happens during the installation of software:
    1. After restarting the machine, open the NI Registration Wizard by going to Start Menu>>Programs>>National Instruments>>NI Registration Wizard.
    2. Close the wizard and restart the machine.
    3. After reboot, re-launch the driver software installation you were attempting.

Note: An alternative to the above instructions is to simply wait 10 minutes before re-attempting the driver installation.
