Removing DAQ Hardware from Windows 95/98/ME
Hardware: Legacy DAQ Devices
Problem: How do I edit my Windows 95/98/ME registry to remove unrecognized DAQ devices?
Solution:
DISCLAIMER: Inappropriate changes to the Windows Registry can disable the operating system! To safeguard against such an accident, we recommend that you back up your existing registry by choosing "Registry»Export Registry File..." after launching the registry editor and before making any changes.
The following directions help you edit your Registry in Windows 95.
- From the menu bar in Windows 95, click on the Start button, and choose Run.
- Type "regedit" in the window (as shown below) and choose OK.
- When this comes up, choose the following directory structure:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- Enum
- ISAPNP
- Your screen should look something like the one below:
- Inside this ISAPNP directory, you should have some directories that begin with "NIC." This is actually the Windows 95 Registry, and these directories represent how National Instruments cards are viewed by Windows. When you install the board before the driver, Windows 95 makes these directories, but they don't link the card to the driver.
- Important Note: before going on with these directions, if you have any other National Instruments Data Acquisition cards that are in this machine and running fine, see KnowledgeBase 3ZBANA88, linked below. You wouldn't want to remove those cards from the registry.
- In the case that this unrecognized card is your only NI data acquisition card, do the following:
- Delete all directories that begin with "NIC" and are in the ISAPNP directory.
- Exit the Registry Editor.
- Do not reboot your machine yet!
- Install the NI-DAQ Driver.
- After the driver is installed, reboot your machine. The device should be found.
