How Can I Test a Device that Requires Excitation in MAX?

Primary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation Explorer
Primary Software Version: 4.3
Primary Software Fixed Version: 4.3
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: SCC>>Modules, SCXI>>Terminal Blocks

Problem: I am testing my SCXI device using test panels in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) but the values aren't what I'm expecting. Is something wrong with my device?

Solution:

The test panels in MAX do not configure a device with excitation to take measurements. What you need to do is create a new Task to see the actual output. There are two different ways to do this, depending on whether you are using NI-DAQmx or Traditional DAQ. The following instructions are for SCXI devices.

DAQmx

  1. Add your SCXI chassis to your NI-DAQmx Devices and Interfaces by right-clicking NI-DAQmx. Select Create New...> SCXI Chassis
  2. Auto-detect your modules and add your accessories, etc.
  3. Now you must create a new NI-DAQmx Task by right-clicking Data Neighborhood>Create New...>NI-DAQmx Task
  4. Select Analog Input>Position>LVDT
  5. Select your channel and finish the configuration.
  6. Now click on the new task. The task panel should appear, and it should have fields for you to enter the voltage excitation and frequency.

Traditional DAQ

  1. Add your SCXI chassis to your Traditional DAQ Devices and Interfaces by right-clicking Traditional NI-DAQ. Add SCXI Chassis.
  2. Go through the options and set up your chassis. Let it autodetect your connected modules. It should appear under the Traditional DAQ tree.
  3. Expand the SCXI tree and right-click the module you want to test. Select properties. You should then see a dialog box appear where you can edit the Voltage excitation and frequency.

Check to see what values you are receiving when you run the actual task (either in Traditional or NI-DAQmx).

Note: You do need to have NI-DAQmx 7.1 to do this properly in MAX. You can check your version of NI-DAQmx by selecting NI-DAQmx under Software in the My System Tree in MAX.
