Can I Install Real-Time on my PXIe-8130 Controller?

Problem:
I would like to set up my PXIe-8130 controller so that it can boot into LabVIEW Real-Time, or as a dual-boot system with Windows.  Is this possible?

Solution:
In order to install the real-time operating system, or to make it a dual-boot controller, the PXIe-8130 must have a Parallel ATA (PATA) hard drive.  To check whether your 8130 controller comes with a parallel ATA (PATA) or serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, refer to the following table:

If your controller does not have a PATA harddrive from its factory configuration described above, the necessary hardware to install a PATA harddrive is not present, meaning one cannot replace the existing SATA drive with a PATA drive.

It is important to note that the LabVIEW Real-Time operating system will not support any PXIe-8130 controllers with a SATA hard drive for two reasons:
  • LabVIEW Real-Time (RT) versions prior to 8.5 do not support SATA hard drives. 
  • LabVIEW RT 8.5 and onwards only supports SATA hard drives in Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI), and AHCI is not supported on the chipset used by the PXIe-8130 controllers
Once it is determined that an RT-compatible PATA hard drive is present, the hard drive should be formatted as FAT32 for LabVIEW Real-Time to be installed.  You can learn more about this installation process by referring to KnowledgeBase 44A9Q1PB: How Can I Make My PXI Controller a Real-time Target?  Alternatively, the PXIe-8130 supports LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5.1 or higher with the Reliance File System.  For more information on installing Reliance, see KnowledgeBase 4JKCTSQ0: How do I install Reliance on my RT PC or PXI Target?
