How Do I Use the Speker Output on a VXI Embedded Controller?

Hardware: VXI/VME/MXI>>VXI Controllers

Problem: The last several models of VXIpc embedded controllers released by National Instruments have included a sound output jack on the front panel, but when speakers are hooked up to this jack, the expected sound from the Windows OS or various music applications is not heard. What sound output can I expect from this speaker jack?

Solution: None of the NI VXIpc models, through the most current (VXIpc-870B), have an onboard sound card included in their hardware. Therefore, the speaker output jack on the front panel of these controllers cannot output high quality sound from the Windows OS or various media players. The speaker output is identical to the internal speaker found on most desktop computers. Its output is limited to various singular "beep" tones, which can be modulated based on their frequency. To hear the various tones, a speaker must be connected to the output jack.

There are no plans to include a sound card in VXIpc models. For the higher quality sound associated with sounds cards, an easy solution would be to purchase USB speakers that have a sound card built into them.
