What is the Difference Between the 5B-01 and 5B-02 Backplanes? Hardware: Signal Conditioning Other>>5B Series
Problem: What is the basic difference between the 5B-01 and 5B-02 backplanes and why does NI support one and not the other with NI DAQ boards? Solution: The 5B-01 backplane is a 16-channel backplane that provides single-ended, analog input/output signal conditioning to a Data Acquisition(DAQ) device or board. Each of the 16 channels on the backplane is connected to a separate channel on the DAQ board, allowing the user to configure each of the DAQ channels with different 5B modules. Thus, Channel 0 on the DAQ device is hard wired to the module connected to Channel 0 on the backplane, and likewise up to Channel 15. The 5B-01 backplane would allow a maximum of 16 conditioned signals per 16 channel DAQ board with simple hardware connections. This direct connection to each channel on the DAQ board allows for a system that does not require digital control of the signal conditioning modules and therefore fully utilizes the speed of the DAQ card. The 5B-02 backplane is also a 16-channel backplane that provides analog input/output signal conditioning to a Data Acquisition(DAQ) device, however, each of the 16 channels on this backplane are routed to the same channel on a DAQ device or board. This allows the user to configure 16 different 5B modules and signals per channel on the DAQ board. The 5B-02 backplane has a series of digital encoders for input and output that act as a multiplexer and switches between the channels on the backplane. As the encoders are given digital addresses, the 5B modules become active or inactive depending on the address, so that only one channel on the backplane is providing data to the DAQ channel at any given time. Thus, for a standard multifunction DAQ board with 16 analog input channels and 2 analog output channels, the user would be able to condition 256 analog input signals and 32 analog output signals with simple hardware connections. National Instruments sells and supports the 5B-01 backplane. The advantages to using the 5B-01 backplane are:
The advantage of the 5B-02 backplane would be the high channel count that can be achieved per DAQ board. Related Links: Product Manuals: 5B User Manual Attachments:
