Why Do I Have to Supply Power to the UMI-7764?Hardware: Motion Control, Motion Control
Problem: If the UMI-7764 is merely a breakout connector for my NI motion controller, why do I have to externally power it with 5 volts? Solution: The UMI-7764 contains intelligent circuitry that helps you interface a 73xx motion controller with third-party drives and encoders. NI motion controllers accept single-ended encoder input. However, many encoders use differential signaling to reduce line noise. The UMI has a differential receiver that translates the signal to a single-ended source for the motion controller and it also handles the amplifier inhibit signals. This receiver requires external power. A 5V supply is used to power this circuitry on the UMI and is also distributed to the per axis 5V supply on the Motion I/O Terminal Blocks. The 5V per axis supply on the Motion I/O Terminal Blocks can be used to power encoders, limit switches, or other general purpose devices. The UMI also provides a +5V signal to the motion controller while it is connected. If the connection is broken and the 5V is not present, the lack of this signal (called the host bus interlock) will cause the controller to inhibit all axes.
