Quadrature Encoder Counting By Two

Hardware: FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>FP-QUAD-510, Counter/Timers (TIO)>>Devices>>PCI-6602

Problem:
I have a quadrature encoder connected to my counter and it seems to be counting by two with every tick. In addition, at certain values the count register will appear to respond out of order as if the count back-tracks for a couple of ticks.

Solution:
These symptoms can be an indication of a missing phase on your quadrature encoder. The source of this problem could be one of two components:

  • Bad wiring between the card and the quadrature encoder
Make sure both leads from your quadrature encoder are properly connected to the correct terminals and check to make sure you do not have a faulty cable or terminal block.
  • Poor quality pulse from quadrature encoder:
Verify the pulse emitted by the quadrature encoder is a valid and readable signal for your counter input. This can be done by connecting the encoder to an oscilloscope or analog data acquisition (DAQ) board to verify the rise/fall time and amplitude of the signal.
