Problem:
I am installing NI software on Windows 2000 or XP and when I launch the installer, I receive an error message with Severe in the window title, and the message Wrong OS.

I click the OK button, and the installer continues to run. Should I reinstall to correct this error?

Solution:
This error appears on Windows 2000 or XP when you install versions of LabVIEW and/or toolkits that were released before the operating system itself.

Windows 2000 and XP are built on the same technology as Windows NT, but certain system identification parameters changed between NT and 2000. Some National Instruments legacy installers use those identification keys to determine how to install software. In the case of Windows 2000 and XP, the installers run as if they were on Windows NT, which is correct, but they do not identify the operating system correctly, which generates the error window. You can ignore the error and the installer will work correctly.

Installers that demonstrate this behavior include the following:
  • LabVIEW 5.1 or any LabVIEW installer released before Windows 2000
  • LabVIEW Control & Simulation Toolkit
  • LabVIEW Internet Toolkit
  • LabVIEW PID Control Toolset 5.0
  • LabVIEW SQL Toolkit
  • LabVIEW Fuzzy Logic Toolkit 5.0
